Episode 7 Syllabus
Lecture 7 will focus on totalitarianism, using as a main text The Rape of the Mind: The Psychology of Thought Control, Menticide and Brainwashing (1956) by war psychiatrist Dr. Joost Meerloo, who spent his career working with American POWs from the Korean War. I will outline how totalitarian constructs are purposefully designed to destroy the mind by breaking down the subject’s ability to think for themselves and to think critically; this is largely accomplished through programming, the elimination of standards by which to make comparisons and through the State’s construction of fantasy-systems, which are presented to subjects as a form of escape and reprieve. In the second half I will highlight the new media’s highly important role in creating the new paradigm, partly in reference to the ‘narrative war’ that developed around events in Syria and in reaction to the 2008 Recession during the 2016 Presidential election; key WikiLeaks will be noted, along with the concept of decentralization. This lecture is a good resource for people new to the alternative media sphere as it cites a wide range of sources and maps out the connections between different sectors.
