Activists continue to flood into Chicago after the investigative report by the Guardian was made public and blew the lid off of a secret detention facility operated by the CPD and used to hold and interrogate US suspects. More and more victims are coming forward as the investigation expands. As the allegations from victims increase, the strength and diligence of activists increase as well.
Organizers at Saturday’s protest urged victims to come forward, “We need you to come forward and say yes I have been a victim of abuse.” One activist said, “Please come forward and let the people know so we can take some action.”
This protest was brought forward by a social media storm where activists used the hashtag #Gitmo2Chicago and #OpHomanSquare to trend social media sites and spread awareness of today’s protest and the Orwellian style police tactics that seem to be the norm in the Windy City.
Although the Chicago Police Department denies these claims, the truth is coming to the surface. Six people and multiple attorneys came forward this week with accounts supporting the allegations brought forward by the Guardian.
Dauntless Dialogue will continue to follow this story as it unfolds. This is only the beginning. Activist Travis McDermott told the Guardian that Saturday’s protest was one of many being planned as far away as Los Angeles.
